Jesus And The Sabbath(1)
Seven days a week, a calendar commonly used throughout the world, comes from the Jewish calendar. The seventh day of the week is the Saturday, the Sabbath. What's the difference between the Sabbath under the law and under grace? When learning the Bible, many people may be confused on why it was so severe in the Old Testament so that people were very scared. Because it was in the Old Testament which was the covenant of law. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, which was set at the beginning of the world. Before God chosen Abraham, Sabbath already exist. Later God chosen Israel and promulgated the commandment on Mount Sinai.
Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. (EXO 20:9-10) Please note here very clearly that no matter what the work, can’t do in Sabbath. In chapter 31, Moses reiterated ‘Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people. (EXO 31:14 ).The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. (EXO31:16 )
Who set this rule? God himself.
There was a man picking firewood on the Sabbath, then God instructed Moses to stone this man to die. In the book of Daniel, which foretold the coming of Jesus to rebuild the temple of Jerusalem. He came to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to firm covenant, and to stop sacrifice. Jesus came and gave the new covenant.
We come to see how Jesus do it? How did he to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to firm covenant, and to stop sacrifice? In the Gospel of New Testament, we can see that Jesus did heal on the Sabbath. Someone came to tempt Jesus and brought charges against Jesus. They wanted to see if Jesus did according to the law because this was God's commandment.
On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.”So he got up and stood there. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.”He did so, and his hand was completely restored. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus. (Luke 6:6-11)
Why did not Jesus heal him in the first six days? Why must on the Sabbath? He could escaped the Sabbath in order that those who piety to laws should be created. Why did he break the tradition of the elders from such a long time? Did Jesus not respect God? Did he not respect the synagogue leader? Did he not consider for them at least? If the synagogue leader did not stop Jesus, then how did others think of? Because Jesus did work on the Sabbath. We come to think why did Jesus not act according to the law? Was he unruly? This was the law of God, and it was still in the Temple of worship of God in Jerusalem. Who knew Jesus here?
From a human perspective, this was a person from an unknown place. Nathanael also said straightly before knowing him, "Can anything good come from Nazareth? Others stopped Jesus from healing on the Sabbath, and Jesus said they were hypocrites. We already knew that the commandments of God were clearly written there. And those who serve in the Temple were Levites and Aaron's descendants chosen by God. It was their duty to enforce the law. Was not Jesus gentle and humble? No. What was the reason? Brothers and sisters, we have to think about what Jesus taught us through such things.
Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.” The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her? ”When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing. (Luke 13:14-17)
From the law, Jesus broke the laws, even the commandments of God. Therefore, Jesus was finally crucified on the cross. The Bible says that cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole. So when Jesus died, those who were pious in laws and served God in Jerusalem clapped their hands happily.
It was through his death that Jesus rebuilt the Temple of Jerusalem. He took his body as a temple, died on the cross, entered the hades, and tasted death for people. On the third day he rose from the dead, was taken to heaven, and the temple was rebuilt. It is through his death the commands and regulations were set aside and his purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace. Purifying the conscience of the people, forgiving the sins of men and strengthening the covenant between God and man by the precious blood flowing from his side.
Jesus was free, and on the Sabbath he saw someone in need of healing and salvation so he saved and set the oppressed free .
