The Land Flowing With Milk And Honey
The land you are entering to take over is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you planted your seed and irrigated it by foot as in a vegetable garden. (Deuteronomy 11:10 NIV)But the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys that drinks rain from heaven. (Deuteronomy 11:11 NIV) It is a land the Lord your God cares for; the eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end. (Deuteronomy 11:12 NIV)
In geographically speaking "The land" refers to the land of Canaan in which the Israelites live. Moses contrasts the land of Egypt with the land of Israel. Egypt is a desert with no high mountains and deep valleys while the land of Canaan has nearly 3,000 meters of mountains and valleys of 300 meters below sea level.
Egypt has no rain with dust flying everywhere and relies on the Nile irrigation while northern Canaan has plenty of rain with earth moistening and lush growth of trees and grass which is called the land flowing with milk and honey. Milk is the essence of animals and honey is the essence of plants, milk and honey is representative of the rich life.
"The land" is referring to Jesus in the New Testament for us. Only relying on Jesus Christ can we enter into the land to have a more abundant life. Not only entering the land, but also getting the land as an industry. The people who believe in Jesus live apart and take "the land" as his industry.
For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; (Deuteronomy 8:7 NIV)a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; (Deuteronomy 8:8 NIV)a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills. (Deuteronomy 8:9 NIV)
The land is rich in resources, and not only has plains, but also valleys, mountains. Like our faith, we are not always in plains, sometimes we would meet the mountains which means encountering difficulties and sometimes we would meet the valleys which means encountering loss.
"The land" has ups and downs of mountains and valleys with flowing milk and honey. We need mountains and valleys so that the rain can be brought together in the valley that can make us fruitful. We do not forget to be humble to glory to the Lord when we are in the mountains and present our reguests to God by prayer and petition when are in the valleys.
