What Is Speaking With Other Tongues In Pentecost
Acts 2:1–4 (NKJV): 2 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 2:13 (NKJV): 13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”
What is the OTHER TONGUES here in the Bible, are they any exisitng language, like English, German, Spanish, or Italian?
Indeed, speaking in tongues is speaking with rolled tongues, which produce a strange sound of tongues.
What does the Bible mean here? Let us explain it in detail.
1. All the verses in the Bible have her mate verse to explain and supplement it because no verse shall fail, no verse shall lack mate.
Isaiah 34:16 (NKJV): 16“Search from the book of the LORD, and read: Not one of these shall fail; Not one shall lack her mate. For My mouth has commanded it, and His Spirit has gathered them.
2. The whole church in Jerusalem spoke in other tongues. Here are some points:
(1) The tongue appeared like fire. Speaking in tongues in the Bible is the tongue jumping like fire in the mouth. However when you speak English, Spanish, Italian, tongues are not like fire.
(2) The New Tongue in the Bible is a miracle or a sgin accompanying with believers. However a person who speaks English, Spanish, and Italian is not a miracle.
(3) People came and watched the disciples when the Jews heard them speaking in tongues. Today if a group of people speak English, Spanish, Italian, others will not come and watch. Because the Israelites scattered all over the world. It is common thing to speak foreign languages.
(4) Someone mocked at them as drunk. While someone speaks English, Spanish, or Italian, others would not mock them as drunk.
(5) In Act 10, Peter saw Cornelius speaking in tongues, said that they had received the Holy Spirit. Cornelius himself is an Italian. He would have spoken Italian in a foreign language, but Peter said he did not receive the Holy Spirit. But when Cornelius spoke in tongues, Peter said that he had received the Holy Spirit. It can be seen that speaking in tongues is not speaking in English, Spanish, or Italian.
3. The book of 1 Corinthian continue on explaining the speaking in tongues. If someone speaks in tongues, which are not interpreted, he is just like the foreigners to other as no one understands. So he want to speak in tongues, he shall pray that he may interpret it. Why? Because speaking in tongues cannot be understood. While it is interpreted, others can understand.
In Pentecost, the whole church in Jerusalem spoke in tongues, and none of them understood it. But God interpreted the tongues to different native languages according to their countries, the English people heard as English, The Spanish people heard as Spanish, and the Italian people heard as Italian, The Isreal people heard it as Hebrew.
Only in this way, it is possible that 120 disciples prayed in tongues, meanwhile other 3000 Jews from more than 16 countries and regions heard it in their own languages where they were born.
1 Corinthians 14:9–13 (NKJV): 9 So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without significance. 11 Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to him who speaks, and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me. 12 Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel. 13 Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.
Acts 2:8–11 (NKJV): 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”
4. It is that God opened the ears of some Jews to understand the tongues. However for the other Jews, God did not open his ears, so what he saw was that Peter and other disciples in Jerusalem were drunk and crazy, and they mocking said them full of wine. For some, God opened their ears to understand what Peter said in tongues. God interpreted the tongues to their native langueges. For the British, it was translated into English. For the Spanish, it was translateed into Spanish. And For the Italian, it was translated into Italian. For Jews, it was translated into Hebrew. As we know Peter, they are Galileans, their accent is different from that of the rest of Judah.
Acts 2:11 (NKJV): 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”
Acts 2:13–15 (NKJV): 13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.” 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.
Job 36:10 (NKJV): 10 He also opens their ear to instruction, And commands that they turn from iniquity.
Isaiah 50:5 (NKJV): 5 The Lord GOD has opened My ear; And I was not rebellious, Nor did I turn away.
5. Why we say that the disciples in Jerusalem spoke in tongues. This is based on Peter explaination in Act chapter 10 and 11.
Acts 10:44–46 (NKJV): 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered,
Acts 11:15–16 (NKJV): 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning [This happened in Pentecost]. 16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
6. He who speaks in tongues does not speak to men, but to God because no one understand him. However if he who speaks English, Spanish, or Italian, still there are some people understand him. But speaking in tongues, no one can understand it, it is that the tongue jumping like fire. If I said no one can live in moon, means no anybody, including you, me, all the others in this world. So here means, NO ANYBODY can understand the tongues.
So Paul said, speaking in tongues, thanking God. This is good. But it cannot edify others because others don't understand. However speaking in English, Spanish, Italian, thank God, there are some people don’t understand, but still many people can understand.
Then again, Jesus said it was a NEW tongue. And English, Spanish, Italian has been existing for a long time, not a new tongue.
1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV): 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
1 Corinthians 14:14 (NKJV): 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
1 Corinthians 14:23 (NKJV): 23 Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?
Mark 16:17 (NKJV): 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
